Ingredients and Notes

This no-churn ice cream is a special treat with absolutely no machine required!

  • Heavy whipping cream: Also called whole whipping cream. This will be whipped into whip cream and give the no-churn Nutella ice cream its creamy texture.
  • Sweetened condensed milk: This is not evaporated milk! It makes this homemade Nutella ice cream rich and decadent.
  • Nutella: It’s not Nutella ice cream without Nutella! Use store bought Nutella or make your own homemade Nutella
  • Peanut butter chips: Peanut butter chips add the peanut butter to the Nutella chip ice cream. Feel free to use your favorite chip!

Variations

  • Chips: Use whatever chocolate chip you have on hand for this Nutella chip ice cream or even a combination of semi-sweet chocolate chips and peanut butter chips for the best no-churn chocolate chip ice cream.
  • Chopped chocolate: Instead of chips use a good quality chopped chocolate bar.
  • Hazelnuts: Add some chopped roasted hazelnuts to really enhance the nutty flavor of this Nutella hazelnut ice cream.
  • Boozy: Add 1-2 Tablespoons of Frangelico liqueur for an adult version of this ice cream and as a bonus it keeps the ice cream even creamier. It’s the perfect gourmet way to end a dinner party!

Expert Tips

  • Metal loaf pan: Chilling a metal loaf pan will help the Nutella ice cream recipe freeze more quickly.
  • Chilled tools: Chilling your mixing bowl and beaters helps create a better whipped cream.
  • Don’t over whip the cream: Your whipping cream is ready when it creates a peak that stands up on its own. Check by stopping your mixer, sticking the beater straight down and pulling it up. If it creates a peak, it’s ready!
  • Gently fold in the Nutella mixture: Stir gently so you don’t let all the air out of the whipped cream.

Storing

Store leftovers of your no-churn Nutella ice cream tightly wrapped in the pan in the freezer for up to a week. Storing it near the back of the freezer can help prevent ice crystals.

If you plan to store it longer than a week, store it in an airtight container for up to two weeks, if it lasts that long!

Can I use regular chocolate chips instead of peanut butter chips?

Absolutely! Feel free to customize this recipe to your liking by swapping out the peanut butter chips for another mix-in like chocolate chips, nuts, or small pieces of your favorite candy bar.

What is Nutella?

Nutella is a spread made with sweetened palm oil, hazelnuts, milk powder and cocoa. The chocolate hazelnut taste is simply divine!

How to serve Nutella ice cream?

While perfectly fine as is, if you want to make your Nutella ice cream treat extra special, drizzle it with some chocolate sauce or serve a scoop with this chocolate pudding cake. A strawberry sauce would also be delicious and some homemade whipped cream is always a must!

Make a Nutella ice cream banana split sundae for an even more indulgent treat! Just add your Nutella ice cream to a bowl along with sliced bananas, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Sandwich some no-churn Nutella ice cream between two Nutella pinwheel cookies for an ice cream sandwich. Yum!

Can I use an ice cream machine to make homemade Nutella ice cream?

Yes, you can use an ice cream maker although the ice cream with Nutella will not need to be churned for as long. So plan accordingly and check it earlier than your ice cream maker instructions indicate.

Can I double the recipe?

Yes, you can easily double or even triple the recipe to make more ice cream, you might need an extra loaf pan and also longer freezing time depending how much you make.

Do I need to let the ice cream thaw before serving?

It’s best to let the ice cream sit at room temperature for 5 minutes or more if your ice cream is solid and difficult to scoop.

What can I do with leftover Nutella?

There are so many options to use your leftover Nutella! Use the chocolate hazelnut spread to make this creamy Nutella liqueur, stuffed Nutella cookies or Italian Nutella cake. It’s also great to spread on toast, cookies, cupcakes or just to even enjoy eating a spoonful straight out of the jar.
