In Italy Summer means Granita and Sorbet and of course you can’t forget Gelato. But if you are looking for something cool, refreshing and no bake, than a Lime Granita is for you.

granita how to make sugar water mixture, starting to freeze

What is Granita?

  • Granita is a dessert eaten with a spoon that originated in Sicily.
  • It is a mixture of water, sugar and fruit juices which is then placed in the freezer.
  • It is very important that the mixture is stirred often during the freezing so that the water does not separate from the juice while forming ice crystals.

It is a very easy dessert or even snack to make, just a little patience is needed. Stirring often with a fork to break up the ice and combine the ingredients is all it takes.

I decided to make a Lime Granita, but you can pretty well use an fruit juice you want. I happen to love anything lime, and lemon for that matter. I find lemon and lime during the summer so refreshing.

How to make Granita

  1. In a small pot combine water and sugar, cook for about 5 minutes, let cool completely.
  2. Add strained juice and zest to cooled mixture, then pour into a freezer safe container.
  3. Freeze for about 30-40 minutes, then with a fork break the ice crystals.
  4. Repeat 3-4 times or until mixture is slushly.
  5. Serve in a glass with a spoon.

granita made in ice cream maker

Especially during the hot as heck summers i pass in either Toronto or Rome.

I have been using my ice cream maker a lot this summer and thought why not try a batch of Granita in the machine also. Well I have to tell you it was amazing. This time it came out more like a sorbet. But just as delicious and refreshing.

Not to mention faster too.

FREEZER GRANITA

  • In a small pot on medium high heat combine the sugar and water, bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes.  Let cool completely.
  • When the syrup has cooled had the strained lime juice and zest, whisk to combine.  Pour into a freezer safe bowl.  Place in the freezer for approximately 1 hour (may be more or less time depending on your freezer).
