Homemade Allspice
Homemade Allspice is an easy recipe substitution, no more need for store-bought when you have the perfect combination of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
Living in Italy always made it very hard for me to make certain desserts that I loved and craved, including my favourite, Pumpkin Pie!
Needless to say if I didn’t bring back a supple of certain spices from my visits to Canada I was out of luck. Luckily I discovered that yes you can make your own Substitution for Allspice.
And yes you can tone them to your own desired tastes.
I am not a great lover of Nutmeg or Cloves but boy do I love Cinnamon, so this Homemade Allspice I decided to make with a touch more Cinnamon. But if you love all three equally then just make them all the same measurement.
What is Allspice?
All spice is actually a berry from the Jamaican Bayberry Tree. It has a similar flavour to the combination of cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Making this the perfect Homemade Allspice substitution.
Not only do you know exactly what is going into your Homemade Spice but you can make it exactly to your liking. Works for me!
Now I can make all the Pumpkin Pies my heart desires, but I can also whip up this amazing Homemade Pumpkin Cream Liqueur!
When you think about it a small tin of allspice from the grocery store can cost you almost 5 dollars, which in my opinion is absolutely outrageous! So why not make your own?
All it takes it 5 minutes and then you have your own Homemade Allspice exactly as you like it. Enjoy!

thanks this is a real lifesaver.
Thanks so much Beverly, happy to help. Have a great weekend.
I’m about to try this allspice recipe, as for some reason it has disappeared of the shelves in the shops – perhaps a TV chef has included it in some recipes, which is often the cause! Anyway, could you clarify if I use a tablespoonful of ground cinnamon or a ground cinnamon stick – I have both? And I’m not sure about the cuisine being American – I’m a Brit and use allspice often, and today I will be making a Greek recipe with it!
Hi Alison I used ground cinnamon, ground cinnamon stick sounds interesting though. Happy New Year.
Thanks for sharing the recipe. The cake is moist. I didn’t have applesauce, substituted it with yoghurt. I didn’t have cheese cream so using cinnamon buttercream frosting. It taste great as well. The 9 inches size pan lasted within 2 days only.
Thanks Angie, glad you enjoyed it. Merry Christmas.
hello-i’m not much of a cook and am new to allspice (just making my own ketchup which calls for it) I did buy the store stuff $$$ yikes! Do I use whole cloves and just put them in grinder? I assume so yes? Looking forward to trying your version – thanks!
Hi Kelly, I know the prices for spices is crazy. Actually to save time you can buy ground cloves which is what I use in the recipe. Let me know how it goes.
I recently made a banana home bread which included an addition of Allspice which, as you stated, unable to find in Italy. Searching the web I found your recipe which ingredients I will buy once the lockdown ends, as the suoermarket near me does not have 2 of the ingredients.
Thank you it was very helpful.
Hi Lidia, thanks glad to help. Take care.
How simple is this? Even a dunce like me could manage this I reckon. I have not had a chance to try it out yet as I am on the road at present but it will definitely be getting a run out when I get home.
Hi Fergy, let me know how it goes.
I think this will be great for my Swedish meatballs!!!!! I LOVE that I can adjust the ingredients for all my recipes.
Hi Kelly, thanks, I love Swedish meatballs.
I used this allspice recipe to make a delicious homemade applesauce. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
Hi Cathy thanks so glad you liked the spice.
Thank you so much for posting this. I’m actually in the other boat, so to speak. I have allspice, but NOT nutmeg. So, I can just substitute allspice for the total measurement of the 3 spices plus some extra cinnamon (I prefer more as you do) and I’m good to go.
Thank you again.
Hi Debbie, sounds good. So glad it worked out. Have a great weekend.
II can’t seem to find allspice so I appreciate the substitution recipe I will try it thank you
Hi Robbin, your welcome and I hope it works for you.
Used your recipe to make a banana date bread today and guess what?
It turned out great and the world didn’t end.
Thanks and Happy New Year!
Hi Lenya haha thanks so glad you enjoyed it. Happy New Year to you too.
You are aware that Allspice isn’t a blend of spices but in fact a dried berry, right? I feel like its deceitful to keep calling this mixture Allspice. At least clarify that this blend can be used as a SUBSTITUTION for Allspice. Allspice has a distinct peppery flavour that sets it apart from these other warm spices.
Hi Sam, yes you are absolutely right and I have added a note on the recipe. Thanks
Allspice is not a mixture of spices, but a berry. You can buy it whole. It is misleading and just wrong to make a spice mix and call it allspice. Why not just call it a fall spice mix. Just to be correct.
This came at the perfect time! I was just about to attempt to make some apple cider, and one of the ingredients is allspice, which I didn’t have!
Hi Nicole, so glad to help. 🙂
Funny that the reason I was attracted to this post had nothing to do with pumpkin pie – I used allspice to make Jamaican slow cooker beans and needed allspice. Oh well, if I make a batch of your homemade version, I’ll make both the beans and the pie:)
Hi Laura, I love anything Jamaican I will have to try the slow cooker beans, let me know how the pie works out.
