You can’t go wrong with peach desserts such as peach cake to an easy peach bread or even peach ice cream but for an extra easy dessert this crumble is it. It’s made the old-fashioned way with simple ingredients and even easier preparation. Fresh peaches are so delicious that you don’t need to do much to turn them into a wonderful dessert.

What is a Crumble?

Maybe you’re wondering the difference between a crumble, crisp, and a cobbler? All of them are similar, and all of them can be made with peaches. The difference is in the ingredients.

A crumble, like this peach, crumble recipe, is a topping made with brown sugar, flour, and butter. If you added oats, it would turn it into a crisp.

On the other hand, a cobbler is a fruit dessert topped with biscuit dough or pastry dough. Once baked, it looks like cobblestone, which is how it got its name. This kind of topping is denser than a crisp or crumble.

tips for making the perfect peach crumble

  • Choose Ripe Peaches: The best peaches to use are juicy, ripe ones, they will give you the texture and flavor. If the peaches are too firm, you can let them sit at room temperature for a day or two to ripen.
  • Adjust Sweetness: It’s a good idea to taste the peaches first, because depending on the sweetness of them, you might need to adjust the amount of sugar in the filling. Mine were not overly sweet.
  • Enhance the Flavor: By adding a bit of almond extract to the filling or sprinkle some chopped nuts, such as almonds or pecans, in the topping.
  • Make It Gluten-Free: If you’re gluten-free, you can easily adapt this recipe by using a gluten-free flour blend in place of the all-purpose flour.

Do you need to peel peaches for a crumble?

No, you can leave the skin on and just slice the peaches. I like the texture that the skin adds, and it’s delicious. If you prefer to peel them, you can, but it is easier just to remove the pits and slice them.

What other kinds of fruit can you use?

You can use any stone fruit to make this crumble. Try nectarines, apricots, cherries, or plums. Fresh berries like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries work well or try some apples.

Or, you can do a mix of fruit. Try combining peaches with blueberries or another combo that you like. There are a lot of options! Depending on the fruit you use, the baking time may need to be adjusted.

Notes

Fresh or Canned peaches?

Fresh or canned peaches can be used. If using fresh use ripe but firm peaches, if using can drain the slices well. A 29 ounce (822 grams) can is the perfect size to use. You can also use frozen peaches, although they should be thawed before using.
If you want a thicker peach crumble then I recommend tossing the peaches with a tablespoon or 2 of flour before placing them on the bottom of the pan.

Can the Crumble recipe be made in advance?

Yes it can, cover the dessert well with foil or plastic wrap and place in an airtight bag. It will keep 2-3 days in the fridge, remove and bake as per the recipe. The unbaked crumble can also be frozen, cover well and place in a freezer bag, it will keep for up to 3 months in the freezer. Thaw overnight in the fridge before baking.

How to store the Peach Crumble

Any leftover crumble should be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated. It will keep in the fridge for up to 4 to 5 days. Re-heat in a low oven or microwave.
To freeze the peach crumble, I recommend freezing it before baking it. That way, you can bake it fresh and serve it warm. You will need to add baking time if you bake it from frozen. It will keep for up to 3 months in the freezer.
