Easter Puff Pastry Pinwheels
These Easter puff pastry pinwheels are simple yet indulgent! Made with layers of flaky puff pastry filled with rich chocolate and nuts then finished with a dusting of powdered sugar, it’s a 3-ingredient treat that is light, airy and decadent.
While I love these Italian Easter uncinetti cookies, sometimes a holiday celebration needs a little chocolate and this Easter puff pastry dessert is just that! Flaky pastry is filled with dark chocolate and chopped nuts before being twisted into a circle shape and baked.
Baked to perfection, it’s similar to my easy puff pastry recipe but instead of filled chocolates this recipe uses melted chocolate and nuts for a sweet treat that is perfectly acceptable for either brunch or dessert.
With a dusting of powdered sugar, it’s perfect to be served for Easter brunch along with Italian Easter bread and just as good with Easter egg nest cake on the Easter dessert table!

Recipe Ingredients
- Puff pastry: Find this in the frozen section of your grocery store or try your hand at making homemade puff pastry!
- Dark chocolate: I recommend a good quality dark chocolate. You dark chocolate will need to be chopped and melted.
- Finely chopped nuts: I used almonds but hazelnuts or walnuts work, too.
Substitutions and Variations
- Orange zest: Add some orange zest on top of the melted chocolate for a bright citrus flavor.
- Cinnamon sugar filling: Instead of chocolate and nuts, make a cinnamon sugar filling with 1 Tablespoon of cinnamon and 1 Tablespoon of granulated sugar.
- Nutella: If you love Nutella, use Nutella and chopped hazelnuts for the filling similar to Nutella puff pastry balls.
- Glaze: Make a powdered sugar glaze with icing sugar and milk to drizzle on the Easter puff pastry dessert after it has cooled.

Easter Puff Pastry Pinwheels
Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 3½ ounces dark chocolate (good quality)
- 2-3 tablespoons finely chopped almonds (or hazelnuts or walnuts)
EXTRAS
- 2-3 tablespoons powdered sugar
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 375F / 190C. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry and gently roll a few times to even it out. Cover half the pastry with the melted chocolate and sprinkle with the chopped nuts. Fold the plain pastry over the chocolate and seal the edges well. Work as quickly as possible, as the chocolate will firm up.
- Cut the pastry into 6-8 strips, twisting each strip (see photos). Roll the twisted strips into a circle and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes or until golden. Let cool on a wire rack, dust with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy!

Expert Tips
- Thawed but still cold puff pastry: Thaw the frozen puff pastry for about 30 minutes before you plan on using it. You want it cold but not frozen.
- Golden brown: For golden brown puff pastry, brush with an egg wash or spray with cooking spray before baking.
- Garnish: Instead of powdered sugar, drizzled with melted chocolate and crushed Cadbury Mini Eggs. You could also decorate with fresh berries!
- Best served day off: While this dessert can be stored, it tastes best fresh served warm or at room temperature.
Storing Instructions
If serving the day, baked pastries can sit out at room temperature. This will help them stay flakier. While these taste best fresh, you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Reheat slightly in the microwave for that fresh baked taste.

You can if you would like! This will turn the puff pastry dessert a lovely golden brown while baking. Mix one egg with a little milk or water and brush it on each circle twist before baking.
Can I make these into a different shape?
Making these into Easter bunny puff pastries would be so adorable! You could shape them into bunnies similar to my Brioche bread bunnies or easier like these bunny cookies.
You could also shape the pastry into a nest by adding some frosting in the middle of each circle and then topping it with Cadbury mini eggs. Other options to shape the puff pastry treats include braiding the strips or making mini twists.

As long as you use a vegan puff pastry and vegan chocolate then these will be vegan.
